How rare is the Grosser?

When the guy at the parts desk looks at you and exclaims, “What’s that!?” you know you’ve got something truly special. But you also realize that keeping this unique car on the road is going to be a challenge. Take, for example, the Mercedes-Benz 600 “Grosser.” Out of the 2,677 ever made, how many are still around today? This hand-built custom limousine was crafted for the elite, boasting technology that was way ahead of its time in the 60s.

What’s under the…wheel?

The impressive Dunlop air-over-hydraulic braking system features four front calipers and two rear calipers, enough calipers to bring the hefty Grosser to a stop! When we received the calipers, we discovered that finding ready-made kits or pistons was impossible, even from Germany. This is precisely why our customers trust us. We meticulously combed through over 2,000 loose part numbers to locate the exact rubber seals and boots required to re-kit the calipers.

Drawing on our expertise, we designed the pistons, machined the blanks, and applied a Nedox hard coating to ensure they resist corrosion and stand the test of time.

The remanufacturing process mirrored that of our standard line of remanufactured parts, beginning with a thorough disassembly and cleaning through a series of meticulous steps. During a health check of critical surfaces and bore tolerances, we discovered that some additional work was necessary. The front calipers needed new piston bores, so they were sent to our re-sleeving facility for further attention.
